Achieving cultural alignment post M&A

Challenge

A USA-based international payment acceptance provider had grown rapidly through international M&A. While this created significant opportunities for the company, it also introduced cultural challenges.

The acquired companies were operating in silos – competing with one another and failing to share insights and resources. Even when new digital infrastructure was introduced, these silos persisted.

The company asked Wordtree to partner with them to:

  • Articulate a unifying narrative
  • Design and deliver company-wide training to embed it

Solution

We engaged with colleagues across the business to gain insight into their needs, challenges, and understanding of overarching corporate strategy. We also interviewed clients across all the company’s verticals.

With the benefit of this insight, we articulated an overarching narrative and voice – which provided a strategic framework for:

• Articulating a unifying purpose
• Communicating their differentiated delivery

To ensure adoption of these frameworks, we created bespoke training – and delivered it to more than 800 team members. These included train-the-trainer sessions, so that the approach could embed and become part of business as usual.

Results

Colleague pulse surveys showed significant upticks for “employee satisfaction” and “alignment with company purpose”.

Collaboration, cooperation and productivity also improved as the international workforce united behind a single narrative.

“Our key objective was to achieve cultural alignment, and to do it to tight timelines. Wordtree gave us a deeply practical solution which used storytelling as a basis for alignment across all our territories. Not only did we achieve our objectives, but our communications skills improved measurably also. I cannot recommend Wordtree highly enough.”
